Training
ISTDP training is based on a psychodynamic framework and covers the following areas:
- Carrying out the evaluation interview, or “trial therapy”, and the selection of patients appropriate for this method
- Psychodynamic assessment
- Development of a strong therapeutic alliance
- Identification of defences and therapeutic skills to assist patients to overcome maladaptive defence patterns and develop more adaptive patterns of relating to themselves and to others
- Facilitating the therapeutic experience and expression of emotions
- Conducting outcome evaluations after the termination of the therapy
Core Group Training is a fundamental aspect of ISTDP training. It is an intensive course, meant for certified psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists. It is based on theoretical teaching, supervision, and discussion of videotaped clinical cases presented by therapists and by supervisors. Group members receive individual supervision within a group setting, and are exposed to a wide variety of cases through watching other members’ cases and supervisory experiences.
Videotape of psychotherapy sessions is the most effective way of learning about emotions and their dynamics. For this reason, most ISTDP teaching and supervision is based on videotaped therapy.
All core group members must be willing to commit to at least one full year of training. Participants wishing to join a core group must be willing to present videotapes of their work as this is one of the central features of this therapeutic approach. Meetings take place over three full days, four times a year, over three years. Core group members are expected to supplement their core group training through attendance of workshops, immersion courses and conferences.
